Andrea Reitan

Since completing my undergraduate studies and becoming an EPt, I have gained employment as a weather observer for the aviation industry. This position has allowed me to take the initiative in how I use my time, which has opened up several opportunities for me that would have otherwise been unavailable. I have been able to participate in online Connect to Chat meetings through ECO Canada, as well as contribute to a non-profit organization as a volunteer member of their executive board. In my volunteer activities, I have published seven short science articles in the organization’s newsletter.

In September 2024, I began collaborating on a research project with someone I met through another organization’s member forum. That project resulted in a presentation opportunity at a scientific conference in St. Louis, MO, last July, and we are currently preparing to submit our work for peer review and publication. While the research itself is not on an environmental topic, it has been an amazing experience in collaboration and interaction with the wider scientific community.

Land Acknowledgment

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we acknowledge that we live, work, and gather on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, including the Blackfoot Confederacy—comprising the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani Nations—as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations.

This land, known as Moh’kinsstis in the Blackfoot language and encompassing what is now Districts 5 and 6, is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.

We recognize and honour the deep connection these Nations have to the land, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share in its stewardship.

As we continue our work, we commit to learning from Indigenous knowledge systems, uplifting Indigenous voices, and fostering relationships rooted in equity, understanding, and reconciliation.
