Freshwater Conservation Canada, previously known as Trout Unlimited Canada, is a science-based, national, charitable conservation organization. Our mission is to conserve, protect, and restore Canada’s freshwater ecosystems and their coldwater resources for current and future generations. For the past 50 years, our watershed-focused work has been guided by science and fueled by the unending passion of our volunteers and professional staff. Our programs and projects focus on assessment, monitoring, and restoration of freshwater systems to ensure healthy water quality and quantity, healthy habitats, and healthy freshwater aquatic communities.
We partner with industry, all levels of governments, and other non-government organizations to accomplish shared conservation and restoration goals. Examples of Freshwater Conservation Canada’s projects include in-stream and riparian habitat rehabilitation, stream crossing replacements, riparian tree plantings, invasive species management, streambank stabilization, small-scale dam removals, and species-at-risk recovery. Our programs incorporate outreach and education to facilitate knowledge sharing while building an awareness and appreciation for Canada’s freshwater ecosystems. Our nature-based and process-based techniques build climate resilience while supporting native biodiversity and connecting communities to natural spaces.
In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we acknowledge that we live, work, and gather on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, including the Blackfoot Confederacy—comprising the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani Nations—as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations.
This land, known as Moh’kinsstis in the Blackfoot language and encompassing what is now Districts 5 and 6, is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.
We recognize and honour the deep connection these Nations have to the land, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share in its stewardship.
As we continue our work, we commit to learning from Indigenous knowledge systems, uplifting Indigenous voices, and fostering relationships rooted in equity, understanding, and reconciliation.
