Northwestel is a telecommunications company in and of Canada’s North. They are passionate about their home, and passionate about the people and communities within it. It’s is their mission to connect the North with services and products that connect Northerners to each other and to the rest of the world. They operate in some of Canada’s most remote places. Of Northwestel’s 97 communities, almost half can only be reached by air. Their operating area covers Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Northern BC and Northern Alberta. Northwestel is proud to operate on the many unique and beautiful Indigenous traditional territories. It’s an area that covers almost 33% of Canada but is home to only 0.3% of Canada’s people. But to Northwestel, distance is all relative. Northerners share a special bond that makes them feel like they are never truly apart. And at Northwestel, they promise to build that bond no matter the obstacles. Northwestel is defined by their culture. They go the extra mile and take responsibility for their work because their values are rooted in the communities they serve.
In the spirit of respect, reciprocity, and truth, we acknowledge that we live, work, and gather on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, including the Blackfoot Confederacy—comprising the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani Nations—as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina Nations.
This land, known as Moh’kinsstis in the Blackfoot language and encompassing what is now Districts 5 and 6, is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3, within the historical Northwest Métis homeland.
We recognize and honour the deep connection these Nations have to the land, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share in its stewardship.
